Privacy Policy for Shade

Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how Shade ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our iOS application (the "App"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices. Shade is currently available only on Apple platforms.

Information we collect

1. Information you provide directly

When you complete the onboarding process, we collect:

• Profile basics: Your name (or nickname) and your selected skin type.
• Protection preferences: Your goal (for example, slow skin aging, stay protected, or protect your family), your typical outdoor times, and the places that matter to you.
• Notification preferences: Whether you enable reminders, and which reminders you want (morning briefing, high-UV heads up, reapply alerts) including their timing and quiet hours.
• Subscription data: Your trial and subscription status for Shade Plus.

2. Information collected automatically

• Device information: Platform (iOS), operating system version, and app version.
• Usage analytics: How you interact with the app, collected through PostHog. Shade does not record screen sessions or replays.
• Approximate or precise location: When you grant permission, your device location is used to fetch the local UV index and forecast. See "Location data" below.
• Purchase information: Subscription and payment data processed by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit.

3. Location data

Shade requests "While Using the App" location access only. Your location is used to look up the UV index, sunrise/sunset, and forecast for where you are, via Apple WeatherKit. We do not sell your location or use it for advertising. You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services; some features (like local UV) will not work without it.

4. Information stored only on your device

The following data is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers:

• Daily streak and protected-day tracking
• Your skin type, goal, and protection settings
• Detailed notification preferences and quiet hours
• Saved places

How we use your information

• Service delivery: To show your local UV index, build your protection plan, and send the reminders you choose.
• App improvement: To analyze usage patterns and improve functionality, design, and user experience.
• Customer support: To respond to your feedback and support requests.
• Subscription management: To process and manage your Shade Plus subscription.
• Communication: To send important updates about the app, where required or where you have opted in.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services that may process information:

Apple (WeatherKit, App Store, StoreKit)

• Purpose: UV/weather data for your location, and payment processing for subscriptions.
• Data shared: Approximate or precise location (for WeatherKit); payment and purchase information handled directly by Apple.

PostHog

• Purpose: Product analytics.
• Data shared: Usage patterns, in-app interactions, and basic device information.

Data retention

• Account/onboarding data: Retained for as long as you use the app. You can request deletion at any time.
• Analytics data: Retained according to our analytics provider's policies (typically up to 12 months).
• Local data: Remains on your device until you uninstall the app or clear its data.

Data security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for data transmission and limited access to personal data by authorized personnel only. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your privacy rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below.

European Users (GDPR)

We comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As an EU resident you have the rights of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20), and objection (Art. 21), the right to withdraw consent at any time, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Children's privacy

The App is not intended for children under the age of 16 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us immediately.

Push notifications

Shade uses local push notifications to deliver UV reminders based on your preferences. These notifications are scheduled locally on your device, are completely optional, can be disabled at any time in the app or device settings, and are never used for marketing or advertising.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy in the app and updating the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the app after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
